Agent-based Solutions

Agent- based solutions must be deployed with a software agent that physically resides on the managed end-point (server, desktop, network device, etc.).  The assumption is that Agent-based solutions provide more detailed information but the architecture has more control over the amount of detail provided.  What is true is that Agent-based solutions have more impact on measurement and the performance than an Agent-less based solution, due to the fact software is being loaded on the device being monitored.  Agent-based solutions also have the added issue of being able to consolidate data from so many agents reporting their data.

Agentless Solutions

Agentless solutions perform assessments across the network and do not involve installation on host machines.  Agentless solutions can scan devices (not just hosts) where agents cannot be loaded.  Most Agentless solutions are non intrusive (except for network traffic) and most provide less detail than an Agent-based solution.  Agentless solutions be design should provide faster and cheaper implementations, updates and reporting.
